To Michaela: If you don't mind, I'd like to offer another pov to your friend. Being informed about the anxiety frenzies that can overtake you is a good thing BUT Perspective! That's the most important thing. When I read the list my stomach clenched, remembering how I felt at times when I taught in rural Japan for a year. The worst thing you can do is to get bogged down. Keep your sense of yourself alive. Keep your head up, your senses open, and remember that your reaction to what you experience IS under your control. Take lots of deep breaths and find a few things to be grateful for at the end of every day - you'll find loads, I promise.
I've written this list more than a few times, too. But, strangely, writing the list usually makes me feel better - especially if I write a list of things that help me cope or things I like about being in the village.
I'm in a rural Fijian village and have 16 more months.

feel you in subsahara africa as a fellow PCV
I felt exactly the same when I was a PCV in Grenada before hurricane Ivan.
